LeBron Raises Alarms With Blunt Admission After Lakers’ Defeat: ‘It’s Called Old’

The Los Angeles Lakers’ seven-game surge came to a halt Monday night as they fell 125–108 to the Phoenix Suns, but it was LeBron James’ postgame remarks — not the loss — that generated the most concern.

James, who sat out Sunday’s matchup against the Pelicans due to left knee injury management, returned to the floor against Phoenix and posted 10 points and three assists. Yet after the defeat, the 39-year-old delivered a stark three-word admission about the reality of playing in his 22nd NBA season.

It’s called old,” James told reporters when discussing the ongoing maintenance of his left foot and knee. He added, “You just wake up with [expletive] that you didn’t have the night before,” offering an unusually candid acknowledgment of how age is reshaping his day-to-day availability.

The comment struck a nerve among Lakers fans who hoped his absence against New Orleans had been precautionary rather than reflective of a deeper, longer-term limitation. While James has been remarkably durable deep into his late 30s — and continues to play at an All-Star level — any admission that age is catching up to him inevitably raises questions about the Lakers’ margin for error.

Still, there is no indication James is nearing a midseason shutdown. The future Hall of Famer has consistently emphasized his commitment to meticulous body maintenance and remains focused on positioning Los Angeles for another postseason run.

The reality, however, is unavoidable: the margin for James to defy time is slimmer than it once was. Even so, suggesting that the Lakers’ season is in jeopardy because of one honest moment from James would be a dramatic overreaction. The franchise’s ceiling remains tied to his availability — but for now, his comments serve more as a reminder of his workload than a warning of decline.
