Authorities in Los Angeles have officially determined the cause of death for Carrie Elizabeth Romney, the sister-in-law of former U.S. Senator Mitt Romney.
The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner announced Tuesday that Carrie, 64, died from blunt traumatic injuries after falling from the roof of a parking garage in Valencia, California, on Oct. 10. The manner of death was ruled a suicide.
Law enforcement previously confirmed they were called to the structure on Town Center Drive around 8:30 p.m., where deputies found her body. Officials said she had either jumped or fallen from the five-story garage near a Hyatt Regency hotel.
Shortly after her death, Mitt Romney released a statement expressing the family’s grief, saying Carrie “brought warmth and love to all our lives” and requesting privacy as they mourn.
Court records show that several months before her passing, Carrie and her husband, George “Scott” Romney — Mitt Romney’s older brother — were in the process of divorcing. Scott, 84, filed for divorce in June, citing irreconcilable differences and requesting that no spousal support be granted to either party. He noted that the couple’s assets and debts were largely separate and accrued before their marriage.
Carrie’s attorney confirmed the divorce had not been finalized at the time of her death. Scott’s legal team declined to comment, citing the family’s grief during what they described as a tragic period.
Scott and Carrie married in 2016 and had no children together. Scott has seven children from previous relationships, including former Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.
